4 Authentic Experiences in Luxor, Egypt

Updated: Jun 10

After 8 visits to Luxor, exploring the popular and off-the-beaten-path archaeological sites, here are my top 4 authentic experiences that will enhance your visit to the city of the Pharaohs beyond the temples and tombs.

  1. Sail on a Felucca Down the Nile

After thousands of years of using traditional feluccas to sail up and down the Nile, don’t miss your chance to enjoy the sunset or drink traditional tea on these unique boats. If your hotel is situated at the waterfront on either side of the Nile, you can arrange to book the ideal time for a felucca ride based on availability, wind, and ideal time of day.

Practical Tip: I would not recommend sailing on a windy day for those who easily get seasick, as the boat rocks back and forth like a sailboat. Instead, you can wait until a calmer day to sail—know there is a chance the felucca gets stuck in the river and may need assistance returning to shore.

2. Stroll Through the Souq

Situated at the heart of the city directly across from the exit of the Luxor Temple archaeological site, the souq is an excellent start to get acquainted with the local population of Luxor and practice your haggling skills. With the smells of spices, glistening lanterns, and jewelry, the souq is an ideal location to familiarize yourself with modern Egyptian culture after days of exploring the ancient sites. Additionally, you can stop by the cafe Oum Kolsoum Café, to try traditional tea with mint and people-watch as the evening passes. Named after the famed Egyptian singer, the cafe is beautifully decorated with traditional patterns and is an excellent meeting point to engage with locals.

Practical Tip: While visiting the souq, be ready to haggle and be social. If you are an introvert, I recommend either visiting the souq in a group or being aware that you may be stuck in conversations. Don’t worry, you can always be polite with a smile and do your own thing.

3. Take a Duffy Boat Ride Across to the West Bank

Whether you are visiting Luxor with a tour or solo, you will likely have the opportunity to ride across the Nile on a Duffy boat to the West bank. If you are staying on the East bank of the river (where Karnak and Luxor temple are located), taking the boats is an efficient way to save time crossing the river directly rather than taking the road across the bridge on the north side of town. Additionally, if you are staying in a hotel alongside the Nile, they will have a fleet of private boat drivers that can take you across the river and back.

Beyond taking the Duffy boats to the archaeological sites, you can ride down the Nile at sunset—an activity many locals do, including bringing sound systems, tea, and even dinner to dance the night away along the Nile.

Practical Tip: The drivers of the boats will often refuse to be paid if you try to use their services only one way. Instead, ask their phone number to let them know when you want to return to your hotel.

4. Look Out over the Luxor Temple From a Cafe

One of my favorite places in the city is overlooking the Luxor Temple from the cafes across the street from the main Luxor square beside the temple. With a stunning view of the temple and the Nile behind it, you can begin to see the architectural wonders of ancient Egypt and their connection to the land and river. The cafe provides the perfect sunset views after a long day walking under the scorching sun or climbing in and out of tombs.

Practical Tip: I recommend ordering mango juice or other fruit drinks. They are freshly made, completely natural, and refreshing after a long day in the Egyptian sun.
